Merry and mindful festive celebrations

The festive season’s here, and we all know it’s a time for celebrating, laughing and creating special moments with loved ones. While many people might picture clinking wine glasses or popping bubbly, there’s no hard-and-fast rule that says good times have to revolve around alcohol. Whether you’re cutting back, going booze-free or just mixing it up, there are loads of ways to keep the festive vibes alive. Here are some fun, alcohol-free ideas, along with tips for enjoying drinks mindfully if you’re moderating your drinking.

1. Mocktails that hit the spot

Who needs cocktails when you can whip up some show-stopping mocktails? Think fresh mango, zesty lime and mint for a “No-jito” or a refreshing berry punch. Don’t forget kombucha spritzers for a fizzy treat. And hot take: fancy glassware makes all the difference—go all out with those garnishes!

Moderating tip: Alternate between mocktails and alcoholic drinks to pace yourself and stay hydrated.

2. Laugh it out with a games night

Pull out the trivia cards, get a round of charades going or challenge everyone to a board game marathon. Games nights are an easy way to bring everyone together and guarantee laughs without relying on drinks.

Moderating tip: If you’re having a drink, set a cut-off time for your last one so you can focus on the fun without overindulging.

3. Get active with your crew

Plan a day that gets everyone moving! Head to the beach, set up a backyard cricket game or take a bushwalk. Active celebrations shift the focus to fun and energy rather than what’s in your glass.

Moderating Tip: If you bring drinks, opt for low-alcohol options to keep things balanced.

4. Let the food do the talking

Why let drinks steal the show when festive food is where it’s at? Think colourful grazing boards, refreshing summer salads and a crowd-pleasing dessert to finish. Get everyone involved in the prep—it’s a great way to connect.

Moderating tip: Pair any drinks with food to slow things down and keep your energy up.

5. Movie nights with a festive twist

Turn your lounge room into a cozy cinema with beanbags and fairy lights or take the magic outdoors with a projector. Add a popcorn bar with toppings and festive snacks to make it extra fun.

Moderating tip: Stick to one drink during the movie and keep water or a non-alcoholic option on hand.

6. Spread the joy through giving back

Why not gather your mates or family for a feel-good activity like volunteering or supporting a local charity? Whether it’s delivering food hampers or wrapping gifts for kids in need, giving back brings the real festive spirit.

Moderating tip: If a glass of wine is part of your evening unwind, enjoy it later in a chilled-out, mindful setting.

7. Party with a theme

Nothing says “celebration” like a good themed party! From tropical vibes to a winter wonderland (even in summer), themes amp up the fun. Match the food, tunes and outfits to the vibe for a party to remember.

Moderating tip: Offer alcohol-free drinks that fit the theme, so everyone has something festive to sip on.

8. Watch the sunset together

Grab a picnic rug, pack some snacks and head out with your mates to catch the sunset. There’s nothing quite like a summer evening outdoors with iced tea in hand and good company.

Moderating tip: Toast the moment with a single drink, then switch back to something refreshing and alcohol-free.

9. Capture the fun

Set up a photo booth or create a holiday video montage to document the good times. Getting everyone involved in capturing the memories often becomes more entertaining than another drink.

Moderating tip: Use the photo breaks as reminders to hydrate or enjoy a non-alcoholic drink.

10. Focus on What Matters

At the end of the day, it’s all about connection. Whether it’s sharing a meal, laughing over old stories or singing (off-key) carols, the best memories come from being present with the people you care about most.

Moderating tip: Set a simple intention for your get-together, like enjoying great chats or sharing gratitude, and let that steer your choices.

The gift of presence

This festive season, give yourself and your loved ones the best present of all: your presence. By swapping or reducing alcohol and leaning into meaningful traditions, active fun and self-care, you can create a holiday season full of laughter, connection and unforgettable moments.

So, grab your mocktail, crank the holiday tunes and enjoy a summer of thriving, not just surviving. Here’s to making this festive season one for the books!

Cheers to a happy and healthy festive season from Hello Sunday Morning

  1. Great article, thanks! This will be my 3rd alcohol-free Christmas, and I’m looking forward to it. For me, Christmas is such a special time that the kids build up in thier minds and hearts, and I love being sober all the way through so that at the end of each day I can still tuck them up in bed with a clear mind, free to have a lovely chat about everything we’ve done, everyone we’ve seen, presents and plans for the next day. I am the adult who can still engage with the kids in our family no matter what time of day, I don’t smell like a brewery, and I wake up the next day with energy and cheer. It’s my gift to my kids and nephews and nieces.
