Changing your relationship with alcohol? How to be kind to yourself
February is a month for kindness. With Random Acts of Kindness Day Week happening this month from 9-15th February, it’s a time when we’re reminded of the power of compassion—toward others, but as importantly, to ourselves.
For many, February can also serve as an opportunity to pause and reflect on their relationship with alcohol. Whether you’re looking to cut back, take a break or hit reset, this month can be the perfect moment to start making meaningful changes. And kindness—especially to yourself—can be the key to success.
Why kindness matters when cutting back
Changing your drinking habits is a journey, and like any journey, it comes with ups and downs. Self-kindness helps you navigate the tough days, celebrate the small wins and stay motivated in the long term.
Instead of focusing on what you can’t do or drink, approach February with a mindset of self-care. Think about what you’re gaining: clearer mornings, better health and more energy to spend on the things that truly matter.
5 ways to be kind to yourself while cutting back
- Set realistic goals
You don’t have to go from zero to hero overnight. Start with small, achievable steps, like swapping your midweek wine for a sparkling water or aiming for a few alcohol-free days each week. Progress is progress, no matter how small.
- Celebrate every win
Whether it’s skipping that after-work drink or saying no to a social event you’re not ready for, every step forward deserves acknowledgment. Reward yourself with something meaningful–perhaps a new book, a yoga class or simply a quiet moment to reflect.
- Don’t dwell on slip-ups
Slip-ups are a natural part of change. Instead of beating yourself up, see them as learning moments. What triggered the slip? What could you do differently next time? Treat yourself with the same understanding you’d offer a friend.
- Practise self-care
Cutting back on alcohol can leave you with more time and energy–use it to focus on activities that make you feel good. Go for a walk, cook a nourishing meal or reconnect with an old hobby. Filling your life with joy makes it easier to drink less.
- Ask for Support
You’re not alone on this journey. Whether it’s reaching out to a trusted friend, joining an online community like Daybreak or exploring a program like Hello Change, having support can make all the difference.
Kindness is the foundation for change
As you navigate February, remember: being kind to yourself isn’t just a nice idea–it’s a strategy for success. When you treat yourself with compassion, you create the space to make lasting changes without the weight of guilt or self-criticism.
So, take a deep breath, set your intentions and approach this month with a spirit of kindness. Whether you’re taking a break from drinking or simply cutting back, every act of self-compassion brings you one step closer to a healthier, happier you.

I find the tips quite helpful and practical.
Fantastic support of kindness, I will follow these, the worst is the self criticism and anger at old thoughts. I am trying to change those thoughts even if they are a little and then I try to acknowledge my progress. I am looking at this as a reinventing of my life focusing on my skills and giving towards others to keep me happy.
