nib foundation’s mission is to help people and communities to live healthier lives – through this partnership, they have supported us in building the first digital alcohol behaviour change program to address high-risk drinking. Our partnership began back in 2015 when they supported us to design, build, pilot & evaluate the first version of this program.

Since its launch in 2016, the Daybreak program has now been used by more than 49,000 Australians and 70,000 users worldwide.

In 2016, we extended this partnership for another two years with a focus on building a new personalised health coaching feature into the Daybreak program, and then to undertake an extensive research evaluation to understand the outcomes that Daybreak was achieving for our members.

Establishing the health coaching program feature into Daybreak was a significant challenge technically (in developing the new health coaching platform) and clinically (as this was the first professional 1:1 interaction that Hello Sunday Morning provided to members).

Three years on, there are around 3,000 monthly interactions between our Daybreak members and our professionally qualified health coaches. Health coaching has been a catalyst for providing a higher level of support to our members who require more support than is available in the self-directed peer-support community. Through a robust evaluation, we know that those who engage with health coaching are:

75%

of participants were more likely to share a post in the community – the Daybreak membership share and post 1,700+ comments and shares each day!

&
86%

of participants were  more likely to support another member in the community – there are more than 6,000 active members in the community each month actively supporting each other!

In 2019, nib foundation signed on for a further two-year partnership to build on the health coaching feature with a view of creating a new Daybreak product. This will see our partnership extended to a total of nine years by the end of the current contract.

“We are proud to have supported Hello Sunday Morning since 2015 and have been impressed with the passionate way they have developed a strong and collaborative business model to pursue their vision to improve Australia’s relationship with alcohol. This partnership represents a significant investment for our foundation, demonstrating our belief both in the positive health outcomes of reducing risky alcohol consumption and in Hello Sunday Morning’s programs as the right initiative to achieve this.”  – Amy Tribe, nib foundation Executive Officer/nib health funds Head of Community

In order to understand the impact that Daybreak has on our community, nib foundation has also supported a 2019 research evaluation by the National Drug Research Institute. The study showed that, on average, use of the Daybreak program for at least three months was associated with:

Reductions in alcohol consumption by half (from 37 standard drinks per week to 17)

Reductions in psychological distress from mild/moderate to the ‘normal’ well range

Reductions in ‘days out of role’ from 3.5 to 0.5 over the three months
